Curious Year 1 pupils build houses after learning about materials in Bristol
Pupils in Year 1 had the opportunity to visit the ‘We the Curious’ science centre in Bristol, where they took part in a workshop to discover why materials are chosen to make different things.
The pupils were challenged to think about why walls are not made of paper, and why we do not use fabric for roofs on our houses.
The children explored the properties of some materials, looking at whether they were windproof, fireproof and waterproof. Once they had identified suitable materials, they learned how to build strong walls and watertight roofs by overlapping the bricks and tiles.
After they learned about appropriate materials, the pupils then designed and made their own houses in the building zone, wearing hard hats and high visibility clothing.
