Over 3,500 people including 800 Old Millfieldians attended Millfield’s annual Polo Invitational at Kingweston, one of the most highly anticipated school events of the year. Parents, pupils, OMs and staff enjoyed two thrilling polo matches between Millfield’s A & B teams, the Royal Navy and an OM team of professional players, as well as a silent auction, fun fair rides, a hot air balloon and a classic car rally.

This year’s event welcomed special guest OM and chart topping musician Ella Eyre, who attended Millfield and Millfield Prep from 2005–2010. In the Sacher Cup, Millfield’s B team took on a visiting Royal Navy team to kick-start the afternoon of polo. A tough match for Millfield’s B team of Captain Year 11 Armand Le Page, Upper Sixth Prince Adejuwon Sijuwade, Upper Sixth Sophie Busutil and Milfield Prep Year 6 Billy Cooper, however all the players performed extremely well against a team that outweighed them in experience, age and handicap. Starting the match with a 2.5 goal advantage, the Millfield team managed to hold their own to score three goals to result in a 5.5 - 9 goal loss, meaning the Royal Navy claimed the Sacher Cup on its 50th anniversary. Most Valuable Player for the match was awarded to Millfield Prep Year 6 pupil, Billy Cooper.

The Ian Balding Cup proved an exciting game for all to watch, with Millfield’s A team taking on the OM team of experienced riders with a three goal advantage. Among the OM team was former England U21 Captain, Max Hutchinson (2007-12; Orchards), professional rider for England, James McCarthy (2015-17; Joan’s Kitchen) and show jumper and University College London’s club organiser, Kristina Karailieva (2009-11; Acacia). The team were managed by Alan Kent, double winner of the Cowdray Park Gold Cup and England representative from 1976–2006. The final score was 4-10 to the OM team, with Millfield’s team of Upper Sixth Captain Oscar Luard, Upper Sixth Nik Rogerson, Year 10 Harry Fuller and Year 11 Bello Ali Shinkafi putting in a valiant effort.

The afternoon included a selection of musical performances by pupils, and guests were also treated to an array of culinary treats and the opportunity of shopping, with a range of brands and food outlets available throughout the day.
