Champion opened in 2003. It is named after Dick Champion, a former Head of the Prep School and his wife Sarah Champion, who was Deputy Head and acting Head. As a purpose built house, Champion is run like a home from home and has a lovely caring family feel to it. It is located next to the other girls' boarding house, Hollies, allowing the girls easy access to meet up with each other.
The house has lots of outside area including two tennis courts, a football and volleyball field, and cricket nets – not to mention our own resident chickens and the neighbouring riding stables. Our team of lively and caring matrons and housekeepers look after us all very well.
Karl and Jane Leonard are the new houseparents from September 2017. Previously they have been houseparents at Berewall since 2009. Karl is a Physics teacher at the senior school, where he also coaches football and cricket. Karl has taught since 2001. He initially worked in the pharmaceutical industry and returned to college to study for a degree in physics with astrophysics. He subsequently worked for an animal charity before settling in Somerset and becoming a teacher. Jane was a bank manager for 27 years before taking up the role of housemother in 2009.
Karl's interests including cooking, cars and classical and rock music (he has played in several bands and at Glastonbury Festival). Jane is a keen cyclist who cycled for Team GB when she was younger. They have three children, Charlotte, Oscar and Harriet.
Lucy Smith is the Assistant Houseparent. She is also the EYFS Co-ordinator and a Reception teacher at Millfield Pre-Prep.
