We pride ourselves as a school in inspiring all our pupils to reach their highest musical potential whatever their starting point. We offer outstanding facilities, a lively and positive atmosphere, specialist teaching and endless opportunities for performance.

Recently we have begun an exciting, innovative programme of ‘new look’ events, running evenings like ‘Millfield at the Movies’, where pupils perform film sound tracks live complete with hot dogs and popcorn; our new  joint Music and Art department event, ‘Sculpting Sound’, a relaxing evening of painting to live musical performances, and ‘Experience the Orchestra' where professional orchestral players coach and perform directly with Millfield musicians.

Our exciting and ever expanding range of ensembles include; Orchestra, Junior and Senior Rock Band, Wind Band, Junior and Senior Choirs, Blues and Jazz Band, Clarinet Ensemble, Oboe Ensemble, Flute Ensemble, Brass Quartet, The Edgarley Ensemble (Millfield Advanced Chamber Music), Year 4 Orchestra, Senior Percussion ensemble,  Junior Percussion Ensemble, Guitar Group and a Harp Ensemble.

Millfield Prep is a centre for ABRSM, London College of Music and Trinity Guildhall music exams. We offer private and group lessons in aural and theory preparation aiming for high achieving music exam results. Boarders have a supervised practice programme to enhance their musical learning.

There are termly musical productions shared throughout all ages alongside internal and external concert opportunities at venues including Wells Cathedral and the Bath Festival. The Music department has its own large Recital Hall, which seats around 200 people, and this is used regularly for smaller concerts and recitals. We are also able to share the Johnson Hall facilities and opportunities of the International concert series and masterclasses at Millfield Senior School, with several of our prep school pupils also being invited to play regularly with senior school ensembles. This provides a natural extension for our pupils as they move up to the Senior School as music scholars, enthusiasts and, most importantly, as confident young performers.

Creative themes

Within music lessons, emphasis is placed on live performance and musical understanding. Pupils are encouraged to play a wide variety of instruments whilst studying topics ranging from African drumming through to the baroque orchestra. Pupils sing regularly as part of their class music lessons and all are given the opportunity to take part in productions and concerts throughout the year. Allowing pupils to explore their musicality through composition is also extremely important to us and each music classroom is equipped with eight iMac computers enabling pupils to hone their creative skills through using the latest Sibelius and Garageband software.

Each term has a department-wide theme which informs the area of the curriculum which is being taught throughout the age ranges and will be followed in ensemble and large-scale concert programmes. The three current themes studied in this academic year are; ‘Revolution, War and Peace’, ‘The World; Explorations & Countries’ and ‘Shows, Festivals and Film’. Children experience a wide range of music ranging from Classical, Folk and Jazz, to, World, Choral, Pop, Rock and Musicals.
