Chess

Part of the Curriculum

As part of Millfield Prep’s continuing commitment to chess, it is taught as an academic lesson in Years 3 and 4. This gives pupils the opportunity to experience the game; some will play socially, others will take the game more seriously and compete at the highest levels. All are supported to develop a logical thought process leading to many cross curricular benefits.

Opportunities for all

At Millfield Prep, we offer after-school and lunchtime chess clubs for players of all abilities. Our resident Grandmaster, Matthew Turner, is always on hand to offer advice and support. We compete against local schools and organise a number of local and national events for both individuals and teams.

Supporting Excellence

Elite players will have an individual programme of study which will include lessons with Grandmaster, Matthew Turner, along with support and guidance at events. Our top players compete nationally and internationally and in recent years our players have competed in France, Gibraltar, Russia and the Czech Republic.

Chess scholarships are available for entry into Years 6, 7 and 8.
