We offer seven language courses at both GCSE and A level.
Year 9 pupils entering the school in A and B band can choose Latin as one of their language options. Native speakers are not able to select their own language as part of the curriculum choice.
The majority of pupils study at least one language at GCSE/IGCSE and are encouraged to take more, if interested. Many then choose to study one or more languages to A level. Pupils can choose from:
Understanding languages enables us to connect better with other cultures. It increases our understanding and appreciation of the world and people around us. Importantly, fluency in an additional language is a much sought-after skill in the workplace.
Our team of 19 linguists and five assistants inspire, encourage and challenge our pupils to develop their skills. To further this we ensure class sizes are minimal in size. The highest levels of support are offered to pupils, including workshops and opportunities to take part in events to use their language.
Events and Enrichment
Millfield runs well-supported trips to France, Germany, Italy and Spain. A level pupils enjoy study days, exhibitions, cinemas and theatre trips. Alongside these, pupils participate in language productions such as ‘Le médicin malgré lui’ by Moliere and ‘La dama boba’ by Lope de Vega.
