Abbey has been home to eight head girls and many senior prefects; there have also been numerous international sports women, modern fashion icons, successful musical performers and talented artists gracing its common rooms.
Each Abbey girl becomes part of a smaller Abbey family group. Each group has girls from Year 10 to Upper Sixth and are led by older girls. This approach helps to foster a sense of collective responsibility for each other with the girls working together to create and promote a friendly, supportive ethos in house ensuring it continues to be a home away from school. The house has recently been refurbished and the girls have the opportunity to contribute to the day-to-day running of the house.
There is a main common room for all the girls as well as two smaller common rooms. The house has two study areas and the girls have access to computers, books, daily newspapers and monthly magazines. The younger girls share double rooms and the older pupils have the opportunity to have their own room with an en-suite bathroom. The house has a private garden as well as an open courtyard with great views over the equestrian centre out the back of the house.
Caroline Shelver has been Housemistress of Abbey since September 2014. Caroline and her husband, Kevin, were previously Assistant Houseparents in a boys’ boarding house. Caroline has taught for 15+ years and is an English teacher. Before Millfield she taught in Bristol, the Philippines and London with positions including Head of Lower School, Head of English and Head of Pastoral Care. Her particular interest lies in developing the emotional well-being of the pupils in her care and supporting them to achieve in all areas of school. Kevin is a Business Studies teacher in charge of GCSE; he also coaches the 2nd XV Rugby team and supports the golf department in the Summer.
As a family, the Shelvers and their two children, Thomas and Isla, spend as much time as they can outdoors; walking, cycling and swimming - often accompanied by their dog, Bolt.
