Ivythorn is Millfield's first mixed day house, designed for Year 9s as part of the Nine at Millfield programme. The house provides an excellent facility for the Year 9 boys and girls to develop a broad social group in their first year at the Senior School. Situated amidst a wonderful range of sports amenities, pupils can relax in an open plan and friendly environment, mixing with other children their age and growing as individuals due to the care and encouragement given by the houseparents and tutors.

Included in the house is an area of comfy seating, which offers an excellent space for pupils to socialise and play games such as table football and pool and relax in front of the TV and projector. Ivythorn also has an all-important quiet room for academic study and a small kitchen to make snacks and drinks. There are separate boys' and girls’ lockers/changing rooms, positioned at opposite ends of the house and an outside area in which pupils can run around and play ball games.

Kathy Butt was Assistant Housemistress at Ivythorn from 2014 and became Housemistress in January 2017; she also worked as a live out assistant in Abbey house two years prior. Kathy is part of the Outdoor Education team and has helped to run the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for many years, having completed all levels whist she was at school. She also co-runs the Cheddar MENCAP group, which takes a group of pupils on fortnightly visits.

Kathy has been a teacher since 1994; she has taught in several schools, including one in Hong Kong where she lived for three years. She qualified as a French teacher but in more recent years moved to teaching English to international students. Kathy has also taught History of Art and PE in the past.  She has previously been an examiner and most recently a team leader for GCSE French with Edexcel. Kathy likes to spend time with her family, travel when possible, read and go hill-walking.
