Millfield to welcome top female cricketers for Kia Summer Smash Western Festival

Millfield will welcome the West’s best female cricketers from 12 different clubs for the Kia Summer Smash Western Festival on 20 July.

The teams, including Bridgwater CC, Bath CC and Andover CC, will battle in the one-day festival for a place in the Kia Western Championships final at the Kia Oval in Kennington, south London, in September.

Millfield is well-known as one of the finest cricketing schools in the UK, with seventeen teams (13 boys and 4 girls squads) in active competition against schools across the region. The U14 and U15As and Meyers XI fixture lists are largely made up of fixtures against counties, county academies and university teams.

Millfield’s thriving girls’ programme includes numerous county fixtures and matches against Somerset, Wales, and various university teams. Two Year 10 Millfield cricketers, Jess Hazell and India Owen, received call ups to join Somerset Women in the County Championship over the May half-term.

The school is building a state of the art indoor Cricket Centre, which is due to open in November. The new £2.6m centre will feature new PitchVision technology on three lanes, a state of the art 4G fielding area, three adaptable bowling and batting surfaces, as well as five nets and an expansive 22 metre run-up, placing Millfield at the forefront of school and university facilities.

Millfield Director of Cricket, Mark Garaway, says, “We can’t wait to welcome the participating clubs and cricketers this summer to Millfield, where so many future stars are nurtured and developed. The Kia Summer Smash promises to be a fantastic addition to the ECB’s ever-developing pathway for girl’s and women’s cricket, and Millfield are so pleased to be playing a key hosting role within the UK’s fastest growing female sporting revolution.”

Millfield is also excited to be hosting the full England womens’ A side for a three day tour match and a series of T20 matches against the Australia womens’ A side from the 12 - 19 July 2019.
