    Year 9 Amelie Haworth won the final of the U17 Polish Open

In Athletics, Upper Sixth Lucy Matthews has been nominated for a prestigious award via Athletics Weekly Magazine in the British Junior Women’s category. No Millfield pupil has ever won the award. Voting for Lucy here – voting closes on 10 December.

In Biathlon, the National Biathlon Championships were held in Nottingham over the weekend of 23/24 November. Millfield had an excellent number of pupils qualify from both Millfield and Millfield Prep and the growth and development of both the Triathlon and Modern Pentathlon Programmes were superbly demonstrated. The support and team work of the athletes was demonstrated through a long weekend and the promising results are a tribute to the students and all the coaches with whom they work and train.

Notable results included the Under 14 girls, where Year 9 Tate Green achieved an individual Silver and Team Gold with Year 9 students Katie Sherlock and Georgina Woolard with Alba Becker-Pombo finishing respectfully.

In other achievements, the Under 17 girls’ team of Lower Sixth students Jazz Nobbs, Charlotte Hull and Jessica Hudson achieved a Team Gold, and Year 9 David O’Loughlin placed 5th individually in the Under 16 Boys.

In Clay Shooting, the Millfield team continued their excellent start to the year by winning the last two major schools’ competitions of the year. In the Millfield Invitation competition, the Boys’ A and B teams came first and second. The Girls’ A team came second in their English Sporting competition. The boys also took the win at Autumn’s William Powell Competition near Banbury, where Year 10 Ivor Fothergill from the B team outshot all of the A team to be runner up High Gun for the competition.

In Cycling, Upper Sixth Jen Sykes has been selected by British Cycling for the regional development squad in sprint cycling. Read more about this achievement here.

In Fencing, Upper Sixth David Williams, Director of Fencing Tristan Parris and Fencing Coach Glen Golding have all been selected to take part in a year-long mentoring programme with The True Athlete Project (TAP), in partnership with British Fencing. Read more about the programme here.

In Football, Year 10 students Arthur Sully and Alex Chung have been selected for the U15 England Independent Schools team, with Lower Sixth students Alex Kemsley and Cameron Pike selected for the U17 team and Upper Sixth students Ben Jones, Toby McCallum and Rafa Kaidussis Sampaio Pereira for the U18’s.

Four female Millfield football players been selected for ISFA to play an international match at St George’s Park this December: Millie Quaintance (U18), Lauren Pickup (U15), Gia Sundaram (U18) and Clarissa Jackson (U16).

Mia Pierre-Wetherell and Holly Strong have also been selected for the ISFA U18 reserve team. Millfield girls’ football continues to grow, with players currently selected for the Somerset County School Club and the Somerset FA Advanced Coaching Centre.

In Golf, the ISGA national knock-out saw the Millfield team of Year 10 Harriet Lockley, Year 10 Freddie Turnell and Lower Sixth Tom Gregory have a first-round win against Wellington School at Taunton & Pickeridge. They will play Truro School in the next round in the first week in December at Bude Golf Club, Cornwall.

Millfield have won their way through to the Regional Finals of HMC National Foursomes. The team of Year 10 Harriet Lockley, Lower Sixth Ellie Lace, Upper Sixth William O’Halloran, Lower Sixth Tom Gregory, Year 10 Freddie Turnell and Lower Sixth Callum Whittaker have all played some solid foursome golf in the games.

Upper Sixth Mimi Rhodes has become The Justin Rose Daily Telegraph Girls Champion 2019. Mimi was joined in Portugal at the Finals by younger sister, Year 11 Patience who finished 5th overall. It is the first time in the history of the event, sisters have competed together in the same year. Mimi also signed to attend Wake Forest University, North Carolina August 2020.

Upper Sixth Charlie Goss signs to attend Cypress College, California, no 1 in the Californian State, in August 2020.

In Hockey, the Girls 1st VI won indoor counties on 18th November. They are now U18 girls’ indoor champions.

In Netball, OM Hannah Passmore and current Performance Coach Laura Rudland have both been selected for Team Bath Netball in the Vitality Netball Super League.

Millfield Netball also travelled to Barbados over the half-term for a memorable trip including fixtures against the local community and coaching at Graydon Sealey School. The girls gifted the school some Millfield dresses, tops and bibs to be used at school and within the community. The final fixture of the trip was played against the Police Netball club which included some ex Barbadian Internationals.

In rugby, Millfield Rugby star and Wales Rugby legend Sir Gareth Edwards met with our 1st XV Captain Upper Sixth Oli Burrows and full back Upper Sixth Dan John. They did a great interview together to create a special video for the Sir Gareth Edward’s rugby scholarship fund.

In squash, Year 9 Amelie Haworth won the final of the U17 Polish Open. She also competed in the U15 British National Squash championships and came a close second, an impressive performance for her first year.

In swimming, several students took part in the South West Winter Championships. The school’s swimmers swam aggressively whilst in heavy training and many accomplished personal bests. Several of our athletes bettered their expectations by achieving their first Winter National qualification times. Millfield Swimming were represented in a staggering amount of finals over the course of the meet and a multitude of medals were won.

On Saturday 9th of November, students competed in Round 2 of the National Arena League. Millfield achieved full league points to position them joint top of the Western League going into the Regional Final on December 14th. Thank you to all parent volunteers that enabled this round to run so smoothly.

On Saturday 16th November 38 pupils had a fantastic day in the Olympic park at the annual ESSA relay national championships. The team had a dominant performance, but more importantly had fun and enhanced the legacy of our swim programme. Well done to all of those who were selected and performed so admirably.

Over the weekend of the 16/17th November we had 140 senior school pupils competing at the Team Bath AS and Millfield TYR Super Series. There were a few new English Winter National qualifiers from the meet on top of multiple personal bests. Thank you to Team Bath AS for their fantastic work and resilience over the weekend who were fantastic from start to finish.

Millfield Swimming have had 38 swimmers qualify for the Swim England Winter Nationals. This competition runs from the 5-8th December 2019.

In tennis, both our Year 10 and Year 8 boys’ teams have qualified for the nationals.
