With over 180 boys playing, football is a popular and successful sport at Millfield. A total of 12 teams ensure that every pupil has the opportunity to play in competitive matches and tournaments and full time footballers enjoy a busy schedule, playing teams from all over England.
2018 sees the introduction of a full time girls' football programme led by two female football coaches, which will include training three times a week and a full fixture list. The two coaches are a former England youth coach and a former Chelsea scholar.
Our excellent facilities (11 full sized pitches and three training areas) and team of 19 coaches, including former South African international Terry Akhurst, two UEFA A and three UEFA B licenced coaches, enable every pupil to maximise his skill and fulfil his potential. Players are monitored during the season and first team players in particular are given strict training guidelines. All teams are taught various patterns of play which inculcate the confidence to keep possession of the ball and use it to create three specific situations: Crossing/shooting opportunity, 1v1 opportunity and overload opportunity.
We offer football from Year 9 through to Upper Sixth. The 1st XI train up to six days a week which includes playing one match. All other teams train at least three times per week and play one match. Players who wish to excel in football are nurtured from Year 9, and if they show promise are put into the performance programme, which includes specialised goal-keeping coaching, strength & conditioning sessions, one on one coaching in the form of PS sessions or rotation card, psychological, physiotherapy and performance analyst support. Players who do not fall into this bracket are provided with excellent coaching that ensures each session is fun and game orientated.
Pupils compete in an array of competitions and tournaments, interspersed with numerous friendly games. Alongside national fixtures Millfield also arranges a number of international tours, such as to Holland, Russia, Florida, South Africa and Barcelona.
