Staff Professional Development

Staff professional development is integral to everything we do as a school. Through providing developmental opportunities, we look to improve the quality of education and care offered to our pupils and enable staff to develop professionally and achieve their professional goals.

The courses listed below are, for the most part, open to all members of the teaching community at Millfield. We are happy to welcome external participants to those courses indicated with *. Please contact Tracey Allen at allen.t@millfieldschool.com with any queries.

Pre-Autumn Term Whole Staff INSET

Thursday 30 & Friday 31 August 2018, 9.00am - 4.30pm, Various Locations
These two days will include an introduction to the whole school Triads initiative, focussing on Challenge and Independence, with time in departments afterwards to finalise details.  There will also be some training on strategies to support AEN pupils in lessons and updates on safeguarding and GDPR.  Routine start of term meetings will take place for various groups and there will be departmental INSET sessions.

IStip NQT Mentor Training*

Friday 7 September 2018, 1.00pm - 4.30pm, Wilson Pavilion
This half day course is open to anyone who has oversight of, or significant involvement in, the monitoring and support of an NQT e.g. Induction Coordinator or Induction Tutor. It will explore the Standards and Guidance, as well as unpacking the processes of induction, and the roles and responsibilities within schools.

IStip NQT Mentor Training*

Success in the C Band

Tuesday 18 September, 9.00am - 12.00pm OR 1.00pm - 4.00pm, Wilson Pavilion 
A half-day session aimed at those who are teaching C band classes in Year 9 and 10.  Experienced teachers will share tried and tested strategies to engage, inspire and enthuse pupils who may previously have struggled in lessons. Led by Nicola Jones, Ruth Landrigan and Jo Szymkow, who have all had notable success in motivating pupils and seeing genuine progress in those who might be described as challenging either academically or behaviourally.

Creating Independent Learners*

Thursday 27 September, 9.00am - 12.00pm OR 1.00pm - 4.00pm, INSET Room

This session is open to all, but of particular relevance to those researching independence as part of their Triad. Steve Garnett will look at how we can successfully create independent learners. Steve Garnett is a teacher, award nominated author and trainer with 28 years teaching experience. He has delivered CPD to over 10,000 teachers in 26 countries over the last 10 years.

Monday 1 October, 9.00am for 9.15am - 15.45pm, Gaskell Room

A full day’s INSET led by Simon Ross. The morning session will cover lessons learnt from the 2018 exam and how we can implement those changes in future teaching. The afternoon sessions will be more collaborative with Simon initiating the discussions on successful strategies that people have employed to stretch the more able and support the weaker pupils.
